The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Home Health Aide (HHA) may need to assist a client with the administration of their medications. This is a task that carries huge responsibilities and requires specific training for those individuals who will be assisting a client in these activities. This training is designed to promote a clear picture of the role of unlicensed personnel who will be assisting a client with their medications. It is important to note that in the state of Florida, to assist is not to give the medication, but rather to simply help the client to take their medications. These medications include those that are prescribed by a physician as well as over-the-counter (OTC), or non-prescribed medications. This assistance with medications may occur in a home health setting or an Assisted Living Facility in which the client may be residing. Florida Chapter Administration Code 58A-5.091 states the healthcare provider must complete an initial 6 hour training session followed by an additional 2 hours of training annually on providing assistance with self-administered medications.
